Sustainable Hospitality in the USA: The New Frontier of Experiential Design

Explore 10 top luxury hotels across the USA that blend sustainability and eco-conscious design to create unforgettable experiential stays.

Introduction:

The global climate crisis has reached a critical point, prompting an urgent call for integrated sustainability across all sectors. There is a growing need to incorporate environmental care into every step, from how products are made to how they are used. This shift has resonated deeply within the hospitality sector, where travel, comfort, and culture meet, inspiring a fresh approach to its values and day-to-day practices. Currently, the hospitality industry stands at a turning point by adopting sustainability not just as an environmental goal, but as a broader commitment to social and community well-being.

According to celebrated eco-architect Bill Bensley, “People are becoming increasingly conscious of their environmental footprint and are actively seeking out sustainable options. This shift will drive the hospitality industry to redefine luxury, emphasizing responsible practices and immersive experiences that harmonize with nature. Design will play a pivotal role in shaping this future, as it acts as a catalyst for innovation and showcases the extraordinary possibilities of sustainable hospitality and sustainable travel.” With a portfolio spanning over 200 sustainable hospitality projects across more than 40 countries, Bensley highlights how design-led thinking is central to this transformative movement.

Today, hotels, restaurants, and event venues are no longer isolated experiences as they are becoming deeply interwoven with the lives and landscapes around them. Through initiatives that reduce waste, champion ethical sourcing, and promote mindful tourism, these spaces are quietly planting the seeds of long-term change. This shift is also reflected in the architectural frameworks shaping these spaces. The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) is committed to a sustainable, prosperous future through its LEED certification program. Certifications like LEED, a globally recognised green building rating system, guide sustainable development by promoting responsible energy use, water conservation, and material choices, setting high benchmarks for environmental responsibility in the built environment.

Renowned British designer Ilse Crawford, founder of Studioilse in London, echoes this holistic mindset by placing wellness and well-being at the heart of her residential and hospitality projects. Her sensory-rich approach fosters warm, ‘lived-in’ interiors that enhance everyday life through thoughtful, sustainable choices. Aligning with the principles of the WELL Building Standard, which prioritizes clean air, natural light, and spaces that restore the human spirit, this approach is laying the path for a new design philosophy that nurtures both people and the planet.

Across the USA, we find iconic hospitality projects where sustainability drives innovation and luxury. These 10 examples illustrate how today’s designers go beyond mere construction to create immersive spaces that balance elegance with eco-conscious values.

Amangiri shows its commitment to sustainable luxury in every detail. They replace single-use plastics with sugarcane straws and bamboo toothbrushes, recycle aluminium and cardboard, and donate leftover food to a local wildlife sanctuary. Firewood is carefully gathered to protect the forest, while solar power, electric vehicles, LED lights, and motion sensors help the resort stay eco-friendly and encourage guests to follow the “Leave No Trace” philosophy and respect the land.
