Before choosing a design, identify what the door has to do. Passage door handles turn but do not lock, and suit hallways, closets and pantry doors. A privacy set locks from the inside, for bathrooms and bedrooms. A dummy handle does not turn at all and is fixed to one face, for a closet door or the inactive leaf of a double door. The same form is available across these functions, which is what allows one house to read as one gesture.

Five things then decide whether a piece fits: door thickness, handing, backset, existing lock preparation and the components supplied. Solid brass door hardware is only convincing when it fits, since a lever that needs a different backset than the door was drilled for turns a simple swap into carpentry.
